If your question does not appear in this list, please e-mail us at scholars@uark.edu.

Who is eligible to join the Honors College?

Students with an ACT composite score of 28 and above, or an SAT V+M combined score of 1240, and high school GPA of 3.5 (3.75 for Walton College of Business majors) will be invited to join the first year.

Are there scholarships for continuing students?

Yes. Scholarships ranging from $300 to $5,000 are offered to continuing students through the Office of Academic Scholarships. However, funds are limited, and the competition is keen. The deadline for consideration is March 1. Students should also consult with their academic departments and college Dean’s office to apply for scholarships that are specific to their major.

Can scholarships be combined?

Yes, but state and federal guidelines for combining scholarships and other financial aid require that the total not exceed an amount defined as “cost of attendance.” The cost of attendance includes not only tuition, fees, room and board, but may also cover other educational expenses such as books, travel, personal expenses, study abroad costs, and a computer allowance. The exact amount varies on an individual basis.

Will my scholarships pay for my books?

Students with combined scholarships and financial aid in excess of direct costs, as well as students awarded the Honors College, Bodenhamer, Boyer, or Sturgis Fellowships, will have funding beyond tuition, fees, room and board that can cover books. Staff members from the Office of Academic Scholarships will be available during the Orientation program to explain how the scholarships are disbursed.

When and where do I start planning for a study abroad experience?

Begin immediately by taking foreign language classes in the target country. Honors students study abroad as early as the summer after the freshman year. Meet with an advisor in the Study Abroad Office (575-2006) to explore the possibilities and to plan a study abroad budget, and be sure to apply for an Honors College Study Abroad Scholarship. Deadlines are October 1 and February 1. Applications are available on the Honors College web page.

How often can I study abroad?

Many students study abroad more than once. One student from the Walton College of Business studied abroad six times, receiving funding nationally as well as from the campus. Repeated study abroad experiences can delay graduation, so do plan carefully with the help of an academic advisor.

What happens if I change majors?

Honors programs are available in all majors on the campus, and you can transfer from one program to another. But be sure to compare course requirements, because they do vary somewhat from program to program.

What is the difference between a scholarship and a fellowship?

On the University of Arkansas campus, fellowships require both a paper application an interview. Scholarships require the paper application but not the interview.

What is the benefit of applying by the early deadline?

Students who apply by the November 15th deadline are considered for scholarships prior to being reviewed for the Fellowship competition.

How do I renew my scholarship?

Some scholarships are only for one year. These are not renewable, so you should plan ahead, applying for other awards for current students. Contact the Academic Scholarship Office (575-4464) for more information. The majority of UA scholarships and fellowships require completion of 27 hours in the freshman year and 30 hours thereafter. Scholarship recipients must have a minimum 3.00 GPA at the end of each academic year (this can include summer school). Students who go on academic probation at semester will lose their award immediately; otherwise, the review takes place at the end of the academic year.
